LITTLE HARBOUR a secluded and tranquil, picturesque community with protected anchorage and an interesting deserted lighthouse on the northeast side.

A beautiful sandy beach runs around the harbour which usually holds quite an interesting array of boats.

North Beach has an incredible coral reef to explore and rock cliffs form caves on he western side of the harbour. The fishing is excellent and the bight is an ideal area for bonefishing. Porpoise and sea turtles swim in the harbour and wild orchids grow freely.

The nearest grocery stores are in Marsh Harbour, sixteen miles to the north, or Cherokee Sound, six miles to the south. Since Little Harbour is off the grid, electricity is provided by solar panels and the nearest telephone is in Cherokee Sound.

Randolph and Margot Johnston, with their three sons, made Little Harbour their home during the mid-1950’s and founded an art colony. The community has now grown to twenty-three homes. Internationally known for his lost wax castings in bronze, Randolph died in 1992. His son, Pete Johnston, has carried on at the foundry, creating incredible life-size marine bronzes, furniture and gold jewelry inspired by local motifs.

A gallery, shop and the foundry are open to the public and Pete’s Pub, an open-air bar serving lunch and drinks on the beach, offers up lots of local color (in season). This area also offers easy access to deserted cays, coral reefs, unspoiled beaches, and blue holes.

BAHAMA PALM SHORES is a quite residential area situated on an Eight mile white sand ocean beache, the longest in Abaco. Framed by tall palm trees. An area for those who enjoy being off the beaten path as you will be approx. 25 miles south of Marsh Harbour. Since there is no anchorage in this area, one would need to rent a car or mini-van to explore the 52 miles south of Marsh Harbour to Sandy Point.

CHEROKEE SOUND is a charming picturesque village dating back to 1784, still quaint and quiet. The well stocked Cherokee Food Fair has most of your grocery needs. SNAKE CAY is the old port for Owens-Illinois&39; lumber operation that was active during the 1960&39;s but is no longer in operation.

CROSSING ROCKS is only 12 miles south of Bahama Palm Shores and offers a pretty beach with off-lying rocks. The village offers a bar and restaurant. About 7 miles south of Crossing Rocks the road splits. The road southeast will take you to Hole-in-the-Wall passing through Sandy point Forest Preserve a Bahamas National Trust and home to the endangered Abaco parrot. This is a rough road and should only be attempted in a truch with good clearance.

The paved road to the southwest will bring you to SANDY POINT. This is the only village settlement on the west side of Great Abaco Island. Sandy Point is a small fishing village and offers a grocery store and restaurant. An excellent trip for those who enjoy shelling.

For those who enjoy exploring by bike, car or moped you&39;ll find extensive beaches, colorful villages, blue holes all south of Marsh Harbour. Along the way meet the wonderful people who make Abaco so special.
