When departing the Bahamas, there is a $15.00 departure tax for each person 6 years and over.
Legal tender is the Bahamian dollar, which exchanges at a one-to-one rate with the U.S. dollar. The U.S. dollar is considered legal tender in the Bahamas. Most establishments accept Master Card, VISA and travelers checks in U.S. dollars (small denominations are best). There is (1) ATM is located in Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay.
English is the official language, though spoken with a strong accent.
Pay phones are available, if your accommodations do not provide a telephone.
All long distance calls can be made collect or by Batelco pre-paid phone cards that can be purchased from the local Telephone Company or many stores throughout Abaco. You will find blue phones throughout Abaco, which you can charge a call to your credit card but be aware these phones are very costly.
Cell Phone Use - Cell phone use is changing daily and you should contact your service provider to see if they have an agreement with Batelco Telephone Company in the Bahamas.
Electricity is normally 110 volts. Some properties may only have 12 volts, which is noted in the description.
Holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Whit Monday (40 days after Easter), Labor Day (1st Monday in June), Independence Day (July 10th), Emancipation Day (1st Monday in August), Discovery Day (around Oct 12th), Christmas Day, and Boxing Day (December 26th) - During holidays most restaurants will be open, but all stores will be closed.
